Project SEARCH

From Classroom To WorkPLACE

Project SEARCH is a one-year, school-to-work program for young people in high school with intellectual and developmental disabilities (ages 18- 21). The program is a total emergence from the classroom to the workplace. In 2017, BGV negotiated with the Gaylord Palms to train the Osceola School District students as the host site employer.

How It Works.
The school district provides a teacher and a skills instructor and BGV provides a skills instructor / job coach whose ultimate responsibility is 100 % employment for each student within one year after completion of the program. Students typically become employed at both the host site and other related industries. As of April 2018, 6 out of 7 students have become competitively employed through the efforts of BGVs job coach.

Achieving Results

In less than one year of the Gaylord Palms SEARCH year, BGV was interviewed By Seminole County District Officials  and offered to take over their Florida Hospital site formerly run by a competitor for five years. BGV is currently interviewing for the skills instructor position.

The employment programs manager is currently partnering with Seminole County in all preliminary processes to begin the new SEARCH site. During this process Seminole  County expressed an interest in returning the Hilton Hotel to a SEARCH site and asked BGV to become the new provider. The Memorandum of understanding for both locations, Florida Hospital and Hilton Hotel are in process for the 2018-2019 school year.
